How to Choose Bathroom Renovation Materials

Material selection is where bathroom renovations are won or lost — both visually and financially. Here's how to make smart choices for a Toronto bathroom renovation.

Floor Tile

Bathroom floor tile needs to be slip-resistant (COF rating 0.42+ for wet areas), durable, and easy to clean. Porcelain is the dominant choice — it's dense, water-resistant, and available in every aesthetic from wood-look to marble-look. Natural stone (slate, travertine) is beautiful but requires sealing and more maintenance. Avoid highly polished stone on floors.

Wall Tile

Subway tile in white or soft neutral tones remains a classic that photographs well and sells homes. Large-format porcelain slab (matching floor or complementary) creates a seamless, luxurious look. Decorative accent tiles or feature walls add visual interest without overwhelming small spaces.

Vanities

Floating vanities are the modern standard — they make small bathrooms feel larger and make floor cleaning easier. Solid wood vanities with dovetail drawers are far more durable than MDF/particleboard construction. For main bathrooms, storage capacity matters; for ensuites, aesthetics often take priority.

Countertops

Quartz is the dominant bathroom countertop material in Toronto — it's non-porous, stain-resistant, and available in hundreds of colours and patterns including excellent marble looks. Natural marble is beautiful but requires sealing and stains easily. Engineered stone offers the best durability-to-aesthetics ratio.

Shower Fixtures

Thermostatic shower systems (separate volume and temperature controls) offer more comfort and are increasingly standard in mid-range renovations. Rain shower heads combined with a handheld creates a versatile system. Choose a pressure-balanced valve at minimum — temperature protection is a building code requirement in Ontario.
