Contractor Scams Are Common in Toronto

Toronto's active renovation market unfortunately attracts a share of unscrupulous operators. Understanding the warning signs protects your money and your home.

The Door-to-Door Driveway Scam

A truck pulls up with "leftover asphalt from another job" and offers to pave your driveway cheap, right now. The result: watered-down asphalt applied without base preparation that deteriorates within a year. Never hire contractors who approach you unsolicited.

Excessive Upfront Deposits

Legitimate contractors require deposits — typically 10–30% to cover material costs. A contractor demanding 50%+ upfront before any work begins is a significant red flag. Never pay cash for a full project upfront to someone you just met.

No Written Contract

Any contractor unwilling to provide a written contract is either inexperienced or planning to take advantage of you. A contract protects both parties — there's no legitimate reason to refuse one.

Pressure Tactics

"This price is only good today." "I have another job that will take this spot if you don't decide now." Legitimate contractors don't use high-pressure sales tactics. Take the time you need to make an informed decision.

Unverifiable Business

A contractor with no real business address, no online presence, no verifiable reviews, and insurance documentation that looks photocopied is almost certainly operating without proper licensing or insurance.

Protecting Yourself

Get multiple quotes. Verify insurance. Search the contractor's name online. Ask for and call references. Use written contracts. Never pay full price upfront. If a deal feels too good to be true in Toronto's renovation market, it almost certainly is.
